How can I reduce bruising after my rhinoplasty?
It doesn’t matter if a patient has a rhinoplasty procedure to fix structural issues with the nose or aesthetic issues with the nose, patients can still expect there to be a recovery period. The bottom line is that a rhinoplasty procedure is a major facial plastic surgery, and there will be a healing process that the body goes through after the procedure is complete. Dr. Kevin Sadati, an expert in Nose Job Recovery, emphasizes the fact that each surgery is different and each patient is unique, so no two recoveries are alike. However, most patients who come to his Newport Beach facility will find that they average recovery period lasts anywhere from 7 to 10 days.
It is important that Orange County patients know up front that there will likely be minor bruising and swelling on the face following the surgery. Patients who require an osteotomy — a procedure in which the nose must be broken in order to fix underlying issues — will find that they have extensive bruising and swelling after the surgery is finished. Patients who do not require this particular procedure will have much less swelling and bruising, and possibly not any at all. In a matter of weeks, most bruising and swelling will have subsided.
Dr. Sadati offers these tips for patients who are undergoing a rhinoplasty procedure. These tips will help patients minimize the impact of bruising and swelling on the face.
- In the two weeks leading up to the procedure, avoid all products that have a tendency to thin blood. Examples of such products include aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, garlic pills, glucosamine, vitamin E and ginseng.
- Patients are advised to take a couple of herbal supplements that are known for reducing bruising and swelling. Some of the herbal supplements that Dr. Sadati recommends include Bromelain, papaya extract and Arnica Montana.
- Patients should apply cold compresses or ice packs to their face for the 48 hours immediately following the surgery. Applying these compresses will significantly reduce the bruising and swelling that is present initially, and they will also help to reduce pain, allowing the patient to feel more comfortable.
Rhinoplasty patients will find that within two weeks, almost all bruising and swelling, will have, completely disappeared. Patients who do not feel that their recovery is taking the normal course should contact the surgeon’s office as soon as possible. For best results, patients should strictly adhere to the individualized instructions that Dr. Sadati provides them with prior to surgery. When the instructions are followed and patients take the necessary time the rest, they are usually ready to show off their new nose within a week. Any patient who has questions during the recovery process can contact the office at any time.
